Mono..

Hmm.. Thought i'll atleast compile mono today.. so unmerged mono from my system, and tried to get the latest source via svn. But svn wasnt installed, so emerge'd that .. then got mono n all.. but then it wouldnt compile.. cos of old ver of automake(1.4-p6), so started the emerge of that..but that is upgrading around 39packages(ya havent upgraded to the latest gentoo release).. its compiling the 31st right now(glibc)..

I guess it'll take quite some time.. Time to sleep ...

NOSIP!!!

Finally got the confirmation from Novell for NOSIP!!! Will be starting in Jan'2005.. coool!! hmm.. was pretty bored last nite.. so decided to finally hack iptraf n add some much-needed features.. like watching traffic host-wize.. zooming in on a host n seeing traffic proto/port wize.. then further zooming in to see connections etc.. Well.. one level of zoom is done.. n is working very nicely!!! realllllly useful!!!

NOSIP!!!

I have been trying to send an application and other docs to Novel for joining NOSIP(Novell Open Source Internship Program), but wasnt being able to. I sent a courier 2 weeks back.. and that didnt reach their office at all!! Then I sent another one.. and that didnt reach too.. well, atleast not in the time claimed by the courier company.. but it reached the next day(yesterday)!! So, I'm waiting for the confirmation now.. Am planning to work on MONO.
Two days back I organized the first meeting of our campus Linux User Group! Went off pretty good.. planning to hold the second one on monday. Will try to get permission to have an install-fest then!! Should be fun.. :)

Gaim patch..

Finallly I created the patch for my Gaim (big) file transfer work.. and uploaded it on my server. Nope, haven't posted it to the developers.. cos I think it needs more work and more testing. Now, i just need some people to try out this patch.. Its actually available at Gaim Patch. For those of you not tuned in, Gaim doesnt allow you to send >1Mb files, as it uploads the file to the yahoo webserver instead of directly connecting to the other user. My patch enables that 'direct-connection'.. Its working beautifully, all i need to do now is do the "fallback" mechanism, i mean, if its not able to do a direct connect then the normal upload style should be tried.

Gentoo!!!

Finally installed Gentoo last night, and am upgrading packages and installing lotsa stuff right now. The best thing is its package management system, called the "portage", it handles dependencies beautifully.. something like debian, but this thing downloads the source(you can make it get only binaries also), compiles it and installs it.. complete with all its dependencies.

One of the first things I wanted to install was 3d Accelerated drivers for my nForce mboard. Usually, i would download the drivers, install 'em .. n hope that they worked. But here.. all i had to do was

emerge nvidia-kernel

emerge nvidia-glx

.. and 1 or 2 more commands and it was done! Working nice n cool!!! :D

Gnome-2.8 is getting downloaded and installed right now. The cool thing about this distro is that it has the package files(.ebuilds) for almost any linux software that you can think of!!! I wasn't expecting to find dockapps for WindowMaker but I was wrong.. very wrong! It has ebuilds for lots n lots of dockapps.. I'll post a snapshot of my desktop in a while..

I'll post back with more of my experiences with gentooo... Returning to exploring and installing more apps..
